On Humboldt Bay with Explore North Coast paddle club. Nine paddles traveled about 4.5 miles as we explore the shoreline of the three Humboldt Bay islands.

Lassen Snowshoe

We made a day trip up to Lassen National Park for some snowshoeing today. The snow conditions weren't very good, but we still had fun with a great group of people.

The plan was to shoe up to Ridge Lakes near the South entrance, but 20+ mph constant wind (with gusts to 30mph) made us change locations. We moved down into the forest along Highway 36 and did about 4 miles on consolidated snow.

Hookton Slough Paddle

On Humboldt Bay with Explore North Coast Sea Kayaking Club.

24 of us floated the high tide out Hookton Slough, along the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, for a beautiful paddle under sunny skies and a lifted tsunami advisory.

COVID protocols were followed on shore before and after the paddle, but we were maskless out in the fresh air.

The pandemic has prevented most club paddles for two years, so it was great to be kayaking again with a lot of our friends in Humboldt.

Injured Foot Update

It's been five weeks since I injured my foot (torn tendon) clearing downed Trees on our Mendocino NF Christmas Tree Overland outing, but I'm happy to report the recovering process is coming around. I've been applying hot/cold soaks to help with the healing and I've notice a huge improvement over the last few days.

I did a light hike yesterday and it actually felt pretty good compared to the last few weeks. I'll have a follow up doctor appointment next week (or soon after depending on availability).

Panasonic LUMIX G9 MFT Mirrorless Camera

I recently purchased a new Panasonic LUMIX G9 Micro Four Thirds Mirrorless camera.

My old Nikon DSLR is 16 or 18 years old. It still works fine (and I will continue to use it along with a couple other point-and-shoot Lumix cameras and a couple GoPros), but I wanted a new camera with updated technologies and the ability to take advantage of a few new lenses that I am interested in as I move into retirement and have more time to take photography a little more seriously.

I went with the Lumix MFT because I wanted a smaller frame lightweight camera for adventure photography...only it's not as light as I hoped. It's built tough and weather sealed, so that will fit into the places I will take this.

I'm starting with two lenses...
- Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. (a general purpose zoom equivalent to 24-120 35mm)
Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 ASPH. (an amazing wide angle zoom that should also be great for video)

Next on the list is a Leica 50-200 zoom (100-400 35mm equivalent).

I've been laying low the last four weeks with a torn tendon in my foot and haven't had a chance to do much outdoors, but went out yesterday to try out the new 10-25 wide angle.

These photos were with the Leica 12-60 a few weeks ago...

These photos have been processed with Lightroom and Luminar 4.
